Healthcare has always been a human-centered field, yet today it depends just as much on technology as it does on the expertise of doctors and nurses. Computers have become vital to nearly every aspect of patient care, administration, and research. From electronic health records (EHRs) to advanced diagnostic imaging, healthcare professionals rely on computer systems to store and access patient data, monitor vital signs, and coordinate treatment plans. Hospitals, clinics, and even telehealth platforms depend on technology to provide accurate, real-time information that improves decision-making and patient outcomes.


Computer literacy is especially important for employees in this field because these systems are fully integrated into daily operations. A nurse entering data into an EHR system, a physician analyzing a diagnostic scan, or an administrator using scheduling or billing software all need a basic understanding of how these tools work. Without that knowledge, mistakes could occur, leading to delays in care, miscommunication, or even patient safety risks. Research has shown that health information technology plays a key role in improving patient safety when implemented effectively (Alotaibi & Federico, 2017). Computer literacy allows employees to adapt to new technologies and maintain efficiency in environments where accuracy is critical.


Looking forward, continued advancements in hardware, operating systems, and networking will transform healthcare even more. Faster and more powerful systems will make it possible to analyze massive datasets, such as genomic information or AI-driven diagnostic models, in real time. Networking improvements will expand telehealth access for rural or underserved areas, ensuring more patients can reach care when they need it. Artificial Intelligence is expected to play a central role, from predictive analytics that identify potential health risks earlier to robotic surgical assistants that increase precision in the operating room. Within the next decade, AI-enabled decision support may reduce diagnostic errors and help providers focus more attention on direct patient care.


Computers are already indispensable in healthcare, but their role will only continue to grow. As technology evolves, it will redefine how providers deliver safe, efficient, and personalized care, demonstrating that healthcare and IT are deeply interconnected.
